2013 CSBBCS Early Career Award Winner Dr. David Feinberg

David Feinberg is Associate Professor of Psychology, Neuroscience, and Behaviour at McMaster University. After completing his PhD at the University of St Andrews in St Andrews, Scotland, David completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at Harvard University.David founded the Voice Research Laboratory at McMaster University in 2007.The lab works on a variety of topics related to the perception of voices and faces. David is best known for his work on vocal attractiveness, and studies voice and face perception from evolutionary, cognitive, and social perspectives; integrating methods from acoustical phonetics, psychophysics, face and processing, and behavioural ecology.David brings research on proximate mechanism to evolutionary psychology and adaptive function to cognition and perception, helping to bridge the gap between these disparate fields.Recent research from his lab has investigated psychophysics, memory, and cognitive mechanisms underlying multimodal perceptions of attractiveness, 3D face perception, voting behaviour, and ultimate explanations of mate preferences.

David’s lab publishes in a wide variety of journals, including, Psychological Science, Proceedings of the Royal Society of London, Memory & Cognition, Journal of Vision, Psychonomic Bulletin and Review, Animal Behaviour, Biological Psychology, Evolution and Human Behavior, Behavioral Ecology, PloS One, Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception & Performance, and many more. David is also committed to dissemination of his research to the public and often gives public lectures, and public media appearances. The impact of David’s research is wide, reaching a diverse audience outside the Psychology sphere, including oncologists, paediatricians, OBGYN’s, internet dating websites, Netflix, and social media outlets.
